All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi is a public hospital and medical research university based in New Delhi, India. The institute is governed by the AIIMS Act, 1956 and operates autonomously under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. AIIMS is the first Indian center to perform a successful cardiac transplant. The surgery was performed by P Venugopal, the ex director of AIIMS in 1994. AIIMS has India's first and only minimally invasive surgery training center, under collaboration with Germany. In February 2019 The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister of India has given 'in principle' approval to the Implementation of Master Plan to convert All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi into a world class Medical University.
